Roughly translated as 'Nearby are deposited the remains of Thomas Southcott of Dulcis, esquire, who was descended from the ancient and numerous family of the Southcotts, in which Michael Southcott was prominent in the year of our Lord 1243. This family is celebrated for putting down roots in this County from ancient times, and no less for successfully extending its branches outside. The above mentioned Thomas Southcott was the second son of Thomas Southcott and Mary, daughter of Thomas Shapcott, esquire, of Shapcott. Moreover he was the grandson of George Southcott who had married Joan, the daughter and heiress of Bernard Fry, esquire of Dulcis. He (George Southcott) was the second son of Thomas Southcott, esquire, of Calverley, by Mary, daughter of John Croker, esquire, of Lyneham. He died on 31st December 1715, aged 71, our country's friend, who loved his own family. In memory of him and his forebears, George Southcott, esquire, of Dulcis, his eldest son, erected his memorial in the year of our Lord 1735'
