23/325 Barn at Praewood Farm
II GV
Barn, probably early C18, in 2 builds, later alterations. Timber frame with
weatherboard cladding on brick plinth; plain tile roof with Welsh slate to added
outshuts. 7 bays, the 4 on the right the earliest. Two gabled midstrays, that on
left with later double door and weatherboard, that on right without doors. 2-bay
open-fronted lean-to between midstrays, and weatherboard outshut at left end. Former
stable range (qv) projects from right end. Rear: opposing cart entry to bay 3
flanked by loading hatches, that on right boarded across, that on left with shutter.
Interior: large-scantling unjowelled wall-posts arch-braced to tie-beams which
support tall queen struts; clasped purlins, old rafters, later ridge-piece, curved
wind-braces. Wall frame has sole plate mid-rail and wall plate; close-set studs
(most C19 replacements) and raking braces. The braces from wall posts to tie-beams
are straighter in the slightly later left-hand section, which is now partitioned
off.
