Powder Mills

A Grade II Listed Building in Dartmoor Forest, Devon

The Old Powder Mill, Dartmoor

Uploader's Comments

The buildings date from the time when this was an important tin and copper mining area. Mining extended from Cornwall into the west of Devon, and Dartmoor has a number of mining remains. Gunpowder was required to help break the lodes of tin, copper and other minerals and this Old Powder Mill, dating from 1844, is south-west of Postbridge. It was owned by the Plymouth and Dartmoor Gunpowder Company, and was Devon's only gunpowder factory. These days the buildings include a pottery and small cafe.
