Description

SIT 02 SW HUNTSHAM HUNTSHAM

7/98 The Post Office
-
II

Post Office. Probably late C19/early C20. Stone rubble with a deep slate roof with
crested ridge tiles, pyramidal ends and a pyramidal roof to the centre bay; brick
stack in centre.
Plan: Symmetrical T plan cottage ornh with a projecting polygonal bay in the centre,
polygonal ends and a central entrance. C20 flat-roofed single-storey rear right
addition.
Exterior: Single storey and attic, the design-taking advantage of a corner site in
the centre of the village. The polygonal bay of timber stud and infil construction
has a central front door flanked on either side by 3 1-light iron casements complete
with diamond iron glazing bars; gabled dormer above front door with similar widnows.
The polygonal ends of the stone block have similar 3-light windows with 1-light
windows in the angles and gabled dormers. The rear elevation has 2 gabled dormers, a
central rear door and a rear left recess.
It is not clear whether this is a purpose-built village post office or adapted from a
pair of estate cottages.
A crucially-sited building in the centre of the village.
