5/131 Fleur Cottage and
Furneaux Thatch
GV II
House, converted into 3 cottages and reverted to 2 cottages. Probably C17 or
early C18, possibly with earlier origins; extended later in C18 or early C19.
Painted and rougheart stone rubble. Thatched roof with half hipped ends. Rendered
stone rubble staches, the shafts heightened in red brick, at gable ends and
at rear. Plan and development: Pair of cottages, Fleur Cottage on left and
Furneaux Thatch on right. Probably originally 2 or 3-room plan house, the right
hand room heated from a lateral stack at the back and the left hand room with
a stack on the left hand end wall. If it were a 3 room plan originally the
centre room was either unheated or its stack has been demolished. In circa
C18 extended by one-room plan addition at the right hand end and concerted into
3 cottages. In C20 it was converted into 2 houses and outshuts were built at
the back. The rear outshut to the right of centre is earlier. Exterior: 2
storeys. Not quite symmetrical 5-window south front. Small window openings
with C20 casements. 3 C20 purlines with thatched canopies, to left and right
and to right of centre. Rear elevation has large lateral stack to left of centre,
C20 first floor casements and single storey outducts with corrigated iron and
asbestos tile roofs. Interior: Only the ground floor of Furneaux Thatch (to
right) was seen. It has later soft wood ceiling joints, no main beam and an
unchamfered timber lintel to the fireplace in the right hand room. The left
hand room's fireplace was not seen. The first floor and roof structure were
not inspected and Fleur Cottage was not inspected at all inside.
