North transept. The transepts may have been medieval chantry chapels (where prayers were said for local worthies) before falling into disuse. When the size of the local, rural, population rose in Victorian times, a parish church was needed instead of a tiny chapel. The chantry archways would form the basis of new, larger, transepts.
