There is now, no evidence of an Anglo-Saxon church which probably existed here and the earliest evidence of any building here is c11th century. Parts of the existing building are 12th century and the next 300 years saw a great deal of rebuilding and extension works. Internal re-modelling and additions began in the late 17th century but because of the expense involved, the 18th century saw only petty improvements.
