House. Late C16, extended in early C17, C18 and C20. Timber framed, plastered,
roofed with handmade red plain tiles. 2 bays facing SW, with early C17 3-bay
extension to rear of right bay, and internal stack at the junction. C18
extension to left of main range, raised in C20, with axial stack at end, and C20
extension beyond. C19/20 single-storey range to left of rear extension, the
whole forming an irregular half-H plan. 2 storeys with cellar and attic. 4 C20
casements, and 4 more in gabled dormers. C20 door with gabled canopy. 4
octagonal shafts on main stack. Jowled posts. The main range has unusual ogee
braces at a shallow angle, trenched inside heavy studding. The left bay of this
range has plain joists of various sections arranged longitudinally; the right
bay has a chamfered axial beam with plain joists of vertical section. Both
ground-floor hearths have splayed sides; small bread oven in right side of
stack, incomplete. The rear range has chamfered binding beams with lamb's S
tongue stops and plain joists of vertical section. The left wall of this range
retains C18 zigzag patterned external plaster, now enclosed. The upper storey
has similar splayed hearths, but shallower, and 2 recesses for spices or
gunpowder in the right side of the stack. The rear range has one chamfered
tiebeam with lamb's tongue stops, and plain attic joists. In the attic a
plaster planel is inscribed 'John Searl 1752', and a similar inscription appears
on a ridge tile, now inside the house. 3 early CL7 panelled oak doors. RCHM
