Description

SO 71 NW HUNTLEY NORTH ROAD
(west side)

7/53 Old Rectory

II

House; C16. Close-studded timber-framing, wattle and daub infill,
tiled roof. 2-room plan, central chimney, 2 storey. Gable to
road, jettied at first floor and originally at eaves level: gable
since rebuilt with minimal framing, infilled rendered brick.
Boarded door on right, with 4-light mullioned window to left, with
iron casements. Jetty underbuilt with brick on left. At first floor
a 2-light casement window replaces a canted-side oriel window with
planted sill, (head and sill survives for comparable window to rear,
with 2 brackets below sill). Tension braces to first floor;
panels otherwise floor to ceiling. On left side wall framing
survives to first floor, replaced brick to front part ground floor,
covered lean-to extension rear part. Right-hand side partly
covered by a later stone-built dwelling; exposed ground floor
square panel timber-frame, first floor close-studded. Rear gable
jettied first floor and eaves.
Internally 2 rooms, rear smaller, with axial ceiling beam, front
room large chamfer with bar to run-out stop: first floor beams
similar stop to narrow chamfer. Large chimney set to rear of
second bay; spiral stair from lobby on right: evidence of blocked
doors at both floor levels here. May be solar wing of larger
house.
