Uploader's Comments

After the suppression of the Templars, the land was granted by Edward III to Mary Chatillon de St Pol (c.1303-1377), widow of Aymer de Valence, Earl of Pembroke. She introduced a community of Poor Clares (Franciscan nuns) and carried out much rebuilding. As she never joined the order herself, she was able to live in some comfort.
