Description

SD 92SE TODMORDEN (former M.B.) BAULK HEAD LANE (OFF)
(south side)
Rodwell End
7/31 Cottage 10 m to east of
Lad Stones.

G.V. II

House or outbuilding of indeterminate use to Lad Stones (q.v.). Mid C17, with
early to Mid C18 alterations. Hammer-dressed stone, stone slate roof.
2 storeys. Quoins. South front has main feature of double chamfered mullioned
window of 5 lights with hoodmould with heart shaped label stops. To left a
2-light window. lst floor has two 2-light chamfered mullioned windows and a
single chamfered light. Left hand return wall has pointed arched doorway of
same design as that to cross-wing of Lad Stones (q.v.), forming gable entry
(blocked). Rear has doorway with tie-stones. Single stack of brick.
Interior: Unusual feature of tall pointed stone arch of similar character to
barn to north of Lad Stones (q.v.). It would appear that the building was
originally single storey and the stone arch was inserted when it was raised to
2 storeys. The gable shows the earlier roof line.
