Porter's lodge, now house. 1837. For the Rochdale Canal Company. Coursed stone,
stone slate roof. T-shaped plan. 1 storey, 1 bay with 2-storey gabled cross-wing
2 bays deep on left breaking forward slightly and projecting to rear. West front:
C20 door in chamfered surround formerly with window on right (removed and opening
blocked). Wing has canted bay window with single chamfered light to each face,
cornice, blocking course and coping; above this a chamfered 3-light mullioned window
(mullions removed) and in gable an arrow-slit-type recess. Truncated stack to right
end, external stack to left. Shaped kneelers, ashlar coping, gable finial to wing.
Rear: rear bay of wing lower and narrower with chamfered window surround in gable;
finial to gable of front bay of wing. Main range has 2-light window (mullion
removed) with iron bars. Right return, wing: a chamfered doorway and window
(mullion removed). The barred rear window dates from when the building was used
as a Police Station and the room it lit was a cell. The building was let to the
West Riding Constabulary 1863-94.
