Church of St Oswald

A Grade I Listed Building in Swan Green, Cheshire West and Chester

Plaque, Thomas Cholmondeley

Uploader's Comments

Robert Cholmondeley of the Cholmondeley estates left no legitimate children. His main estate at Cholmondeley was entailed upon his nephew.
Thomas Cholmondeley was his illegitimate son. Robert was able to leave to Thomas the estate of Holford, which he had inherited from his mother, Lady Mary Cholmondeley, nee Mary Holford.
The plaque is interesting, because it actually uses the Cholmondeley coat of arms. It gives the status of his father in detail, but does not mention his mother. His grandfather is not mentioned, but Mary Holford is.
The Roman numerals are no longer clear at the end, but he died 1667 or 1668
