7/96 Beach Cottage and Tower Cottage

Pair of attached houses. Mid C19; Tower Cottage is built on the basement storey of a
probably C18, former blockhouse. Limestone rubble with brick dressings, partly
rendered, asbestos slate- roof, hipped over left end, with central brick ridge stack
heating both houses.
Plan: front entrance to outer side of each house; blockhouse projecting to rear right
of Tower Cottage, Beach Cottage has gable ended wing projecting to rear. Both houses
have front room and rear service room.
2 storeys, both have gabled dormer with scalloped bargeboards, with 2-light casements
in segmental-headed brick surrounds. Ground floor of Beach Cottage has door with
cover strips and hood off wooden piers to left, 3-light casement with cambered brick
head to right. Tower Cottage has round-headed door with cover strips and voussoirs,
2-light casement with segmental brick head to left. Rendered block set back to right
end with 4-pane light at first floor. Right side of Tower Cottage stepped forward,
rendered, wall at ground floor level has pronounced batter with bull-nose moulding in
metamorphic stone; round-headed 4-pane light at ground floor and round-headed lancet
with glazing bars at first floor.
Battered wall and moulding continued to rear of Tower Cottage, not rendered, with
round-headed 2-light casement with relieving arch; single storey addition with hipped
roof, door and C20 window. Gabled dormer above with bargeboards and 2-light
casement. Left side of Beach Cottage has ground floor central C20 light with brick
segmental head, first floor 16-pane sash to left and 6-pane light to right, both with
cambered brick heads. Rear of Beach Cottage, rendered, has gabled bay with 2-light
casement at ground floor and paired round-headed lights at first floor, all with
brick surrounds; C20 glazed lean-to porch.
Interior: Not inspected.
Tower Cottage formerly had an Italianate belvedere tower of 4 storeys, with round-
headed windows and pyramidal tiled roof. Demolished during 1939-45, after bomb
damage. This tower is depicted in an Edwardian photograph in the possession of the
owner of Beach Cottage.
Tower Cottage, with its belvedere, is of similar style and date to Penlee Lodge,
Cawsand (q.v) and 1-3 West Park Cottages (q.v.) which also have a bull nose moulding.
