5/176 Mount Prickle Mine Cottage at
- SW 793438 SE
II
Small house. C18. Painted killas rubble and cob walls wooden lintels and slate
sills. Steep corrugated iron roof, formerly thatched with brick chimneys over gable
ends. Right-hand chimney is over large external tapered rubble breast.
Plan of 2 rooms originally flanking through passage with small larder or fuel store
attached to rear of right-hand room under integral outshut. Partition to right of
passage now removed making larger room but may never have existed. Further service
room added circa late C19 early C20 to rear of left-hand room and under low-pitched
lean-to roof.
2 storeys with first floor partly in roof space. Nearly symmetrical 2-window south
east front with first floor windows closer together. Central doorway with 4-panel
door later glazed to top panels. Deep lean-to open-fronted porch with very thick
unpierced rubble side walls. Window openings are small with circa late C19 4-pane 2-
light casements.
Interior is little altered with original floors, roof structure, pine muntin and
plank partitions, window seats, simple stair and large partly blocked hearth in
right-hand room.
A rare survival in this area of a small C18 house little altered since the C19.
