Farmhouse now divided into house and cottage. Circa C16 remodelled in mid C19.
Slate-stone rubble. Regular C19 slate roof with C19 crested ridge tiles continuing
in rag slates over inner room on right; parallel range on front with C19 slate roof
and C19 crested ridge tiles; main range with gable end on right. The C19 parallel
range added across the front on the left has a gable end on the right. The cross
wing to left has a gable end to front and hipped end to rear. Large stone rubble
stack on higher right hand gable end with cloam oven projection. Brick axial hall
stack backing onto passage to left of centre, brick axial stack to cross wing on
left, probably originally a front lateral stack heating service room prior to C19
remodelling; rendered brick lateral stack to cross wing.
Plan : original arrangement altered during C19 remodelling. Possibly a 3 room and
through passage plan with stone rubble cross walls continuing up to apex on higher
side of passage and on higher side of hall between hall and inner room. The quite
large inner room on right heated by a gable end stack has a stone newel stair in a
stair turret on the front elevation; this gave access solely to the chamber above the
inner room. The hall is heated by an axial stack which backs onto the through pasage
with a stair in a shallow gabled projection to the rear of the hall, towards the
higher end on right. The lower end has been considerably remodelled and was probably
heated by a front lateral stack, enclosed by later addition.
In circa mid C19 the house was considerably remodelled: the higher inner room on
right has remained comparatively unaltered but has an outshot added across to rear.
Across the front of the hall a parallel extension of 1 room depth was added to
accommodate a stair hall with a C19 porch added in front of the entrance. At the
lower end, the service room was remodelled and extended to form a cross wing on the
front of the lower room containing a further reception room heated by a side lateral
stack and a service room to the rear. The roof timbers above the inner room were
probably replaced in the C18 and those above the lower end in the C19. The roof
structure above the hall was not accessible at time of survey. In circa C20 the
inner room was divided from the hall to form a separate cottage.
2 storeys: asymmetrical 7:1 window front with mid C19 fenestration. Gabled end to
cross wing on left and inner room set back from C19 extensions on right. Canted bay
window in cross wing on left with sashes. C19 canted timber porch with flat slate
roof, segmental arched openings and fielded panelling. C19 stair window with margin
glazing bars, horned 12 pane sash and C20 glazed door to right. First floor has 3
sashes in canted bay window and 3 hornless 12-pane sashes. Set back to right, the
inner room, now Cartwheel Cottage with stair projection on left, C20 glazed door and
C20 fire window with C20 window on first floor.
Rear elevation has asymmetrical 4 window front with C19 sashes and casements. Stair
projection infront of hall to left of centre adjoining 2 storey bay projection of
inner room and hipped end to cross wing on right. C20 extension in angle between
cross wing and main range, to rear of through passage.
Interior : remodelled in C19. Cartwheel Cottage, originally the inner room has a
timber and slate newel stair in the projection with C20 fireplace, C19/C20 ceiling
beams and although the roof structure was not fully accessible the collars are lapped
and pegged onto the face of the principals indicating that the roof structure was
possibly replaced in the C18. The chamber above the lower end has C19 plaster
moulded cornice. The hall and roof structure above the hall was not accessible at
time of survey.
