7/77 Homeleigh and The Cottage
(previously listed as Homeleigh and
17.12.62 House adjoining Homeleigh)
GV II
House now divided into 2 houses. Circa late C16. Painted slate stone rubble. Rag
slate roof with several early crested ridge tiles; gable ends to right and left and
gable end to front wing on right. Rendered stone rubble and brick stack on left hand
gable end, rear lateral hall stack with brick shaft and stone rubble axial stack to
right. Stone rubble gable end stack to front wing on right.
The ground slopes down hill to the right.
Plan altered when divided into 2 houses. Original plan uncertain. Possibly a 2 or 3
room and through passage plan, the left hand room heated by a gable end stack and the
larger right hand room on the lower side heated by a rear lateral stack. The
original position of the entrance was probably to the left of the present entrance.
It is uncertain whether there was a small unheated inner room to right on lower side
of hall. In circa early C17 a cross wing of 1-room plan was added at the front of,
and overlapping the lower end of the right hand room, the ground floor heated by an
axial stack at the junction of the main range and front wing and the first floor
chamber heated by a gable end stack on the front. In circa C17 a wing of 1-room plan
was added to the rear of the through passage on left, extended further to the rear
with a second room in circa late C18 or early C19. In circa C19 the house was
divided into 2 and used as a public house. The entrance to the left hand range
(Homeleigh) was moved to the right, in the angle with the front wing. The entrance
to the right hand range (The Cottage) was inserted in the front gable end.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3:1 window front. Ground floor of Homeleigh on left with
C19 horizontal 2-light sliding sash, early C19 12-pane sash and C20 plank door.
First floor with 2-light casement and C19 2-light horizontally sliding sash, both in
half dormers with raking roofs, 4-pane sash to right. The Cottage to right has a C20
replacement 16-pane sash in blocked entrance and C20 part glazed door with porch
constructed of large slate slabs, in earlier window opening to right. First floor
with replacement 16-pane sash with hoodmould above. Slate weathering probably to
earlier outshot on left hand side of wing.
Rear elevation unaltered. 16-pane replacement sashes to The Cottage. Homeleigh has
a 2-storey rear wing of stone rubble with slate roof with gable end; C19 casements
and plank door. Gable end wall rebuilt.
Interior The Cottage has a C20 fireplace and the ceiling beams to the front wing are
chamfered with straight-cut stops. Slighter ceiling beams to rear, chamfered with
run-out stops. Roof ceiled and not accessible at time of survey. The truss above
the front wing has been boxed in and the right hand truss above the lower end is
incorporated into a partition. The second truss, above the higher side of the
passage has a pronounced curve to the foot of the principal. The collar (now
removed) appears to have been morticed into the principals with 2 tiers of trenched
purlins.
Interior of Homeleigh with partitions partly altered and ground rising to left with 2
steps up to left hand room. C20 fireplace in left hand room and circa early C17
cross beam with chamfer. The floor joists to the front of this beam are closely
spaced with chamfer and elongated stepped stops. The floor joists to the rear have
been replaced and are roughly cut. The partition between the left hand and right
hand rooms, originally the partition on the higher side of the through passage,
appears to have a heavy chamfered bressummer although partly obscured. In the right
hand room the partition on the lower side of the passage has been removed although
the bressummer remains in situ with chamfer and straight cut stops. The floor joists
above the passage have bowtell mouldings and the floor joists above the right hand
are roughly cut and have probably been partly replaced in the C18.
Roof structure not accessible. 2 trusses above the right hand room are partly
visible, the rear principal on the lower, right hand side has a pronounced curved
foot although the collar appears to be just lap-jointed and pegged onto the face of
the principals. The trusses have been painted.
