GV II*
Capstan house. Possibly C18, heightened in the C19. Granite rubble walls to the
plinth and ground floor walls with granite dressings to the openings. Vertically-set
tarred weather boarding above. Scantle slate conical roof.
Round plan with man operated capstan (windlass) on the ground floor and former
fishermen's stores above (now shops). Original or C19 machinery, original floors and
roof structure since heightening in the C19.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Ground floor has doorway facing north and 4 other irregularly
sized and disposed openings. First floor has 2 doorways with old boarded doors and 2
window openings with 9-pane fixed lights.
Interior: Unaltered interior has 8 barred capstan in remarkable condition; double
beams with iron strainers for centering drum of windlass; king post roof structure
with diagonal struts and with the weight of the roof carried on struts angled up from
the ground floor walls.
