ST THOMAS STREET
(East side)
Nos.4 and 5 Coburg Place (terrace)
GV
II
Pair of houses in row, with shops. Late C18 or early C19.
Rendered, slate mansard roof. No.5 continues through to
No.106, St Mary Street, with a late C19 frontage.
EXTERIOR: main building: 2 storeys with 2 attic floors, each 1
window, all sashes, but with a central window at first floor.
4-pane flat-roofed dormers above a flat plain sash bow oriel
to No.4 with curved glass to the sashes, and a canted oriel to
No.5; between these is a 12-pane sash with flush moulded box.
No.4 has a C20 shop front under a modillion cornice,
continuing from the adjoining building to the left; No.5 has a
moulded cornice, continued round the skirt of the oriel, and
fluted consoles on thin pilasters, enclosing a late C20
display front. A thin cornice, blocking-course and coped
parapet. No stacks are visible, and the roof has a small lead
upstand roll at the party division.
The rear of this block has 2 narrow upper dormers above 1+2
lower dormers. To the rear of No.5, in St Mary Street, is a
2-storey late C19 display front; the ground floor has been
replaced with a late C20 insert, but the upper level has the
original glass and cast-iron detail, in 3 lights, the full
width, with very slender mullions, very flat 4-centred heads,
and 6 paired transom lights under a deep fascia and dentil
cornice. The slender pilasters, with cappings and
necking-bands, continue to the ground floor.
This type of double-height front is commonly associated with
hardware stores in the later C19.
INTERIOR not inspected.
