Description

KILBURN HIGH AND LOW LOW KILBURN SE 5179 (east side) 8/19 Robert Thompson's Craftsmen Ltd GV II House now display room and office. C16 timber frame with early C18 and later cladding and alterations. Timber frame clad in coursed squared stone, some of it herringbone-tooled, and mottled pink brick in stretcher bond; stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 4 bays with partial rear aisle (to right) and side aisle on right, the range formerly extending further to right. Plinth up to ground floor sill level; bays 1 and 2 are of stone on ground floor, brick above, except on left side; bays 3 and 4 are of herringbone-tooled stone on ground floor with the timber frame exposed above. Bays 1 and 2: bay 1 has board door with wood frame on right of C20 shallow canted bay window; bay 2 has a C20 cross-window under wooden lintel and to its right a small square window; two 12-pane side-sliding sashes to first floor. Bays 3 and 4: paired 2-panel doors on left; C20 2-light 12-pane window on right; on first floor two C20 casements with glazing bars in framed bays which have 3 wall posts with curved braces rising at the junction with the midrail to the wall plate, and vertical studs (most renewed). Side aisle has stone on ground floor supporting midrail. Roof hipped on right and descending over side aisle at steeper pitch. Brick stacks to left end and to ridge between bays 2 and 3 and bays 3 and 4. Rear: roof sweeps down over rear aisle which has 1980s stonework and glazing and wide dormer above. Projecting on right of aisle is C20 brick wing, not of special interest. Interior: visible parts of timber frame include jowled posts on padstones, the aisle posts with sockets for missing ties; curved and ogee braces to wall plates and tie-beams (some removed); mortices (probably for former joists) in side aisle tie-beam (indicating that this bay formerly extended further southwards and was floored); and base of queen struts on one tie-beam at right end. Right-hand ground-floor room has plank and muntin panelling at right end, chamfered spine-beam with pyramidal stops, chamfered joists with run-out stops and C20 fire- place. Left-hand ground-floor room has 2 joists with pyramidal stops.
