Description

THIRKLEBY HIGH AND LOW - SE 48 SE WITH OSGODBY 1/53 High Osgodby Grange GV II Farmhouse with outbuilding. Early-mid C18 altered C19 and C20. Coursed squared stone, Welsh slate roof. 2 storeys with attic, 5 bays; the left part has second parallel range to rear from which extends single-storey rear wing; the right part has a rear outshut. Garden front: outer bays project; plinth; C20 2 or 3-light transomed casement windows with projecting sills and early keyed lintels. Central 6-panel door, the top four panels glazed, with 3-pane overlight and narrow window above flanked by wider windows on each floor. Right bay blind. Left bay has narrow windows as before. Roof comes down tower over outer bays. Ashlar coping. M-section roof with early red brick ridge stack between 2 left bays and smaller cross-ridge stack between right bays. Rear: outshut on left under catslide roof has slatted opening to left and wide, flat-arched window to right. The 2-storey range on the right has later door to left, a blocked former doorway with keyed lintel to right and a similarly-lintelled window above on left. The wing has plinth, chamfered eaves band, cyma-moulded kneelers and ashlar coping. Left return: the front range has attic window with keyed lintel; a similarly-lintelled window to each floor of rear range, the first floor window being a 12-pane sash. Right return: on left, a flat-arched stable door with small window to its left; on right, inserted garage door with timber lintel; in gable, board door with overlight under flat arch. Interior: panelled doors, including fine double-door at first floor landing level; panelled cupboard under stair. Room to left of main (garden front) entrance has: inglenook with chamfered, cambered bressummer supported on corbel from wall on left and heck post on right; large scantling spine-beam; cyma-moulded cornice. Dog-leg, open-string stair with moulded handrail and 2 turned balusters per tread to all but lowest flight. Spiral stair up to left end of front attic which is separated from the rest of the attic and has a collared principal rafter roof truss and square section rafters and ridge-piece; rest of front attic has similar trusses with angle braces to collars and tusk-tenoned purlins. Rear attic: one truss visible, having king post with collar forming cross and V struts.
