DIDMARTON THE STREET ST 8287 (south side) 15/87 The Manor House and former coach-house and stable adjoining on west 6.9.54 GV II

Remnants of the manor house built by Codrington family from late C16 and in C17, refenestrated to south and west in C18, enlarged to north in C19 to form service wing and link to former coach house and stable. Coursed stone with alternating flush quoins, faced in roughcast to west with plinth, stone slate roof with coped gables and saddlestone, ashlar lateral stacks with moulded cornice. Two adjoining gabled ranges, originally the south west corner of U- shaped house as visible in Kip's engraving of c1703, with range to left now recessed originally projecting forward, 2 storeys and attic, with C19 service wing of single storey and attic with slate roof. East front has four 2-light stone mullion and transoms to first floor with continuous dripmould, and single 2-light stone mullion with square hoodmould to each gable. On ground floor one mullion and transom to left with break in dripmould, continued again to right with mullion and transom to right and C20 door set into stone frame to left. C20 wooden glazing bar casements to mullion and transoms. South and west facades have four 24-pane sashes with plain stringcourse between to west and continuous dripmould to south, broken to far right by scrolled broken pediment over moulded stone doorcase with eared architrave and double half-glazed doors. Small central gabled dormer on south side. C19 service wing has mostly 12-pane sashes, and rear link to former coach house and stable has 2 pairs of timber doors. Coach house and stable of C18, now converted to cottage of 2 storeys, has gable off-centre to right, slightly projecting, with large oval keyed oculus set vertically above cambered head arch with keystone and recessed C20 door. Fenestration mostly of C20 or C19 with former wood mullion and transom with timber lintel to each side of gable also with later fenestration. Interior of Manor House not accessible; internal window shutters remain, but much of interior reputed to be of C20. (David Verey, Buildings of England: Gloucestershire - the Cotswolds, 1979)
