Pair of houses. Circa 1860's. Granite ashlar front and rear, otherwise granite
rubble with granite dressings Hipped grouted scantle slate roof with projecting
eaves. Brick chimneys over the side walls and over the central cross -wall.
Plan: pair of identical double depth houses. Each house has reception rooms on the
ground floor approached by bridges to doorways in the north wall. 2 principal
reception rooms at the rear (garden front) of eachhouse and 2 rooms at the front
with cross passage between leading to stair hall behind the, smaller front room
adjoining the party wall. Kitchens and other service rooms on the basement floor and
cellars under part of the basement. Built into the bank in front of the house are
coal cellars.
Exterior: 2 storeys over basement. Pair of symmetrical 3 window north entrance north
entrance fronts. Mid-floor string and chamfered rusticated quoins. Each front has
central doorway with original glazed gable entrance porch with fluted pilaster
corners. Original 4-pane horned sashes throughout.
Rear is a 4 window garden front, similarly detailed to the main front but with
narrower ashlar courses. Small dormer to the middle of each side lights the attic,
and the stair halls are lit by small skylight in the roof.
Interior: Chy Morvah West only inspected. Virtually complete interior with most of
its original carpentry, joinery and plasterwork including: open-well open string
stair with mahogany handrail scrolled over the newel, mahogany panelled doors and
window shutters and moulded plaster ceiling cornices in most rooms. The 2 principal
reception rooms and entrance hall have ceiling cornices enriched with carved detail.
Complete cellar fittings. In front of the houses is the original ornate cast-iron
balustrade.
These houses are prominently sited in coastal scenery opposite St Michael's Mount qv.
