Reading room and adjoining wash house, now used as stores. Circa mid to late C19.
Local shale rubble with granite dressings and red brick rear wall. Slate roof with
gable ends, deep eaves and red clay ridge tiles. Central red brick axial stack.
Plan: Long single depth rectangular single storey building of 2 rooms with a central
axial stack with back to back fireplaces heating the wash house to the left and the
reading room to the right. Both rooms have doorways at the front.
Exterior: Single storey. Symmetrical front with 2 C19 6-pane horizontally pivotted
windows at the centre with slate cills ; and to the left and right of the front C19
doorways each with a plank door. At either gable end a C19 wooden chamfered and
transom window.
There are no windows in the rear wall which backs onto a small stream flowing into
the creek at Porth Navas.
Interior: The reading room has a small fireplace with a moulded granite shelf and a
decorated cast iron grate. The former wash-house to the left is said to have had a
copper boiler.
