4/5 Kilminorth House
27.8.52
II

Manor house, later farmhouse and now private house. Circa C17 with inner room and
chamber above probably rebuilt in early C19. Stone rubble with painted render on
rear elevation. Renewed scantle slate roof with gabled ends to main range. Renewed
scantle slate roof to remodelled lower range with hipped lower end. Scantle slate
roof with gable ends to rear kitchen range. Projecting stone rubble rear lateral
chimney stack to room at higher end. Rendered axial chimney stack in lower gable end
of main range. Projecting stone rubble chimney stack with C20 rendered brick shaft
in lower hipped end of C19 section. Rear projecting kitchen wing with chimney to
kitchen fireplace on gable end removed. Stone rubble axial chimney stack at junction
with C19 range.
The house comprises a 2-room plan with through passage, now blocked at front entrance
and stair inserted. The higher end is heated by a rear lateral stack and the lower
end by a gable end stack. At the lower end of this 2-room range is an early C19
range comprising an entrance hall with stair in projection to rear and room at the
lower end heated by an end stack. A kitchen range projects to the rear of this C19
range forming an overall 'L' shaped plan. The circa C17 chamfered timber lintel over
the blocked entrance leading from the kitchen wing into the C19 range together into
the C17 ovolo-moulded timber lintel over the doorway leading from the C19 range
through the lower gable end of the main range would appear to indicate that the C19
range replaces an earlier range.
2 storeys asymmetrical, overall 5-window front. Ground floor with later C19 or C20
corrugated iron and glazed gabled porch at higher end on left serving inserted circa
C19 entrance. Probably hall window to left of centre with C19 3-light casement and
C17 ovolo-moulded timber lintel with ogee stops. Evidence of blocked entrance to
through passage to right. Late C19 2-light casement with timber lintel to lower room
of C17 range. First floor with Cl9 3-light casement with HL hinges, late C19 3-light
and 2-light casements to centre and right above ground floor openings. In circa
early C19 range on right-hand side late C19 gabled glazed porch with panelled door
and 2 circa early C19 12-pane sashes without horns to right, with continuous timber
lintel. Above, 3 tall circa early C19 18-pane sashes without horns.
Rear elevation; main range with C19 2-light casement on ground floor below slate
dripmould. Circa C20 door to right, to rear of original through passage and slated
hood in angle with rear lateral, probably hall stack to right. Stair window in early
C19 range at angle formed by 2 C17 ranges. Kitchen range in rear projecting wing
with C20 door in partly blocked opening. C19 1-light casement and C20 door to right.
Above 12-pane sash with horns beneath in half-dormer with raking roof.
Lower side elevation of kitchen with C19 2-light casement on ground floor and 4-pane
sash half-dormer with ranking roof. C20 door to right. Lean-to outshut to right,
much rebuilt, originally containing circa C17 winder stair.
Interior main range with probable hall room at higher end much altered. C19 chimney
piece. Ceiling beams and roof timbers above replaced in circa 1970s. Room at lower
end of through passage with large fireplace now blocked by C20 chimney piece. Ceiling
beams, roughly chamfered. C17 ovolo-moulded lintel above entrance in lower gable
end. Kitchen range with large fireplace on gable end with chamfered lintel with ogee
stops. Chamfered ceiling beams, several with plain stops. Inner doorframe to side
entrance door with ovolo-moulded timber frame. Further door adjoining, originally to
stair projection with similar C17 ovolo-moulded timber frame. Circa late C17 roof
timbers with slightly chamfered collars, halved, lapped and pegged into principals.
Principals halved, lapped and pegged at apex.
