SX 45 SW MAKER-WITH-RAME THE CLEAVE (east side),
Kingsand

9/90 Island Cottage

GV II

House. Circa 1750, with C19 and C20 alterations and additions. Rubble, rendered, 2-
span slate roof with gable end stacks.
2-room plan with central entrance and stair to rear of front right room. Deeper
parallel range added to rear in C19 forming double depth plan. In C20, internal
partition walls have been removed and a first floor balcony added to the rear and
right side.
2 storeys and 2 windows, ground floor has two 12-pane sashes and central 6-panelled
door in C20 porch; first floor has two 2-light casements with toplights. Right side
has C20 2-light casement at ground and first floor left; C20 balcony verandah on
brick piers to right with 12-pane sash at ground floor. Verandah is continued to
rear (sea front), with cellar to rear.
Interior: This house retains fine C18 internal features. The ground floor has been
opened as one room; to rear right a dog-leg stair with Chinoiserie panels. Rear left
has fireplace with eared architrave and dentils below moulded mantel, round-arched
cupboard to right and left with shaped shelves and panelled doors. Rest of interior
not inspected, but may retain similar features.
