PATRINGTON WINESTEAD TA 22 SE (west side, off) 6/66 Enholmes Brick and Tile Works 7-11-77 (formerly listed as 'Former Brickworks') - II

Brick and tile works, now offices, stores and workshop. Late 1840s for William Marshall. Renovated 1980-2. Red brick with pantile roof. L-shaped on plan: former brick and tile pressing shop to south-east, with drying shed adjoining to west and north. South side: 2 storeys, 5 bays; twin gables, with central straight joint. Former drying shop section to left has central full-height round-arched opening containing C20 door beneath timber lintel and window with glazing bars in recessed panel; lower flanking round-arched recessed panels, that to right containing C20 door beneath flat brick arch. Former pressing shop section to right has pair of full-height recessed round-arched panels each containing pairs of 12-pane ground-floor sashes with ashlar sills and brick flat arches, and single unequal 9-pane first- floor sashes with sills. Projecting eaves with shaped brackets and plain barge boards. East side of pressing shop: 4 recessed bays, with pairs of 12-pane ground-floor sashes and unequal 9-pane first-floor sashes to each bay with ashlar sills and flat brick arches; inserted panelled door and overlight to rebuilt second bay. West side of drying shed: 22 bays, with stone-coped rounded brick piers supporting exposed tie-beams, 6 bays with C20 sliding doors, the remainder blocked and with windows; corbelled out angle to north west. East side of drying shed: 15 bays, with similar brick piers, single C20 door and casements in blocked openings. Interior: northern section of drying shed contains original roof, with heavy tie- beams, truncated principal rafters, king- and queen-struts. The Enholmes Brick and Tile Works supplied building and drainage materials for the Marshall Estate, which included Enholmes Farm (qv), Enholmes Hall, the Flax Mills (now demolished) and housing for employees. Ceased operation c1950. The round-arched openings and gable details are similar to those used at Enholmes Farm, suggesting the same architect.
