Description

SHOBROOKE
SS 80 SE
2/59 Barn circa 20m east of
- Great Gutton Farmhouse

- II
Small barn. Late medieval origins, remodelled in C17. Cob on volcanic stone footings
which rise to first floor level on south front; some C20 breeze-block repairs;
corrugated iron roof (formerly thatch). Barn or granary with hayloft over. Gabled
each end. Front has two cart loading bays each with small window ambrasure to
right central loading bay to hay-loft. Three-bay roof with side-pegged jointed
cruck trusses with dovetail jointed collars. In right side (east) gable line cuts a
narrow ventilator in the cob suggesting that the C17 build was a remodelling of a
larger and presumably late medieval barn.
