Farmhouse, now house. c1640, altered mid- to late C17 with mid-C19 altera- tions and additions. Timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill, some brick replacement walling on sandstone base; plain tiled roofs. Hall and cross-wing plan; hall of probably two framed bays aligned east/west with small staircase wing to south-west and large external chimney on north side, brick stack; cross-wing at east gable end of two framed bays. Later during the C17 a large wing was added to the entire north elevation of the hall and also a smaller south wing to infill the space between the staircase wing and the main cross-wing. Two storeys, attic and cellar. Framing: mainly six panels from sill to wall-plate and short straight braces in some upper corners; west gable end of hall was jettied at first floor level but has been underbuilt; cross-wing is jettied on moulded consoles at first floor level on its three external walls; hall and cross-wing have jettied attic storeys (all jetties are very shallow); collar and tie-beam trusses throughout with long struts and lower rails. Windows are mainly replacement oak mullion type ("many with transoms). South front elevation: hall part has hipped-roofed staircase wing to left with 2-light first floor window and a small lean-to with a square window; south wing gable end to right has tiled weatherings at first floor and attic levels; a 3-light casement at ground and first floor levels and an attic light. Cross-wing gable end has a tiled weathering at first floor level, a 4-light ground floor window, a 5-light first floor window and an attic light. Main entrance in west side of staircase wing with studded and planked oak door (probably re-used). Interior: hall has large sandstone fireplace about ten feet wide. Main entrance now leads into lobby from which the left side door leads into the hall and the right side door into the lean- to addition; the hall entrance is stop-chamfered on its lobby side and the lean- to entrance is stop-chamfered on both sides; this suggests that the latter door was the original main entrance. The original oak panelling within the house was sold to an American buyer earlier in C20. (BoE, p 152).
