Description

SS 91 NW STOODLEIGH

9/164 Court Garden
-

GV II

Cottage, formerly gardener's cottage to Stoodleigh Court, now Ravenswood School.
Circa 1883, probably by Sir Ernest George and H E Peto who designed Stoodleigh Court.
Stone rubble with Ham Hill dressings and 1 timber framed gable; red tiled roof,
gabled at ends; projecting right end stack with stone shaft, rear left corner stack.
Vernacular Revival style.
Plan: Asymmetrical but approximately a T plan.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2 window front, gabled to the front at the right
with a short wing roofed at right angles slightly set back to the left with the roof
carried down as a catslide to form a porch supported on a timber arch. Front door
into left return of right hand block, which has a timber framed gable, 3-light first
floor stone mullioned window, a 4-light bay window on the ground floor and a 1-light
stone window to the left probably lighting the entrance lobby. The right return of
the house, adjacent to the service drive to Stoodleigh Court, has 2 ground floor
stone windows, 1 on either side of the asymmetrical projecting stack.
The most complete and unspoiled estate cottage in the former Stoodleigh estate, the
style clearly designed to harmonise with Stoodleigh Court.
