11/23 Smith Hill Farm
-
- II

Farmhouse. C18. Colourwashed granite rubble walls. Thatched roof, hipped to left
end gabled to right. 2 rendered rubble stacks - 1 axial and 1 at right gable end.
Plan: 3 rooms in a row each heated - the left-hand 2 rooms with back to back axial
fireplaces. Direct entry, probably into central room although the partition between
this and the right-hand room has now been removed. Entry also into left-hand room
although this may not be original. Outshut added at rear of left-hand room in C19.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front of C20 one and 2-light casements
in small openings. C20 gabled porch towards left end and plank door to right of
centre. At rear is outshut to right. To left of centre on rear elevation is
original 2-light window with central square section timber mullion and leaded
lights.
Interior : All 3 rooms retain their plain granite-framed fireplaces.
Roof: has C18 or C19 A-frame timbers.
This farmhouse has a traditional 3-room plan despite its later date ; it survives in
a substantially unaltered state in a very isolated moorland setting.
