Former large country house, now 3 houses. 1864 by Elmslie, Franey
and Haddon for Rev. G. Williams. Ashlar limestone; ashlar
chimneys; Welsh slate roof. Two-storey with cellar, 3-storey
porte-cochere tower on east front; 3-storey secondary wing at
north end. East front: asymmetrical, dominated by central porte-
cochere tower in full classical style. Arcaded front to ground
floor, round arches supported on paired Ionic columns; segmental
rusticated coachway arches to sides. Three upper floor sashes on
each side to 2 upper floors, all with keyed moulded architraves and
balustrade panels below sills; sashes without glazing bars, top
floor having segmental arched heads. Rusticated corner pilaster
strips. Pediment to each face with moulded oculus in tympanum;
corner chimneys with moulded caps. Tall hipped roof with ironwork
cresting. Five-window fenestration to main elevation to left, 3-
window to right plus projecting break-forward to right, large 4-
pane sashes to ground floor, smaller upper floor sashes, all with
moulded keyed architraves. Hipped roof with modillion eaves
cornice; ridge-mounted chimneys with moulded caps. West (garden)
front: mixed fenestration in asymmetrical arrangement. Off-
centre canted 3-storey bay window with large 4-pane sash to each
face on main floor (treated as piano nobile on this elevation);
smaller upper floor sashes. Tripartite sash to left of bay with
pediment over central part, cornice with brackets; 3 linked sashes
to right with similar pediment and cornice. Banded rustication to
cellar; paired corner pilasters. Plainer service range to left
with 3-window fenestration, central being tripartite. South end:
large contemporary conservatory has rusticated stone piers. Open
balustraded terrace walls adjoin with steps down to lower garden
level.
Interior: fine stair hall with Doric column arcading on upper
floor landing. Ornate cast-iron balusters to staircase with
swept handrail having wreathed terminals. Many good cornices and
fireplaces.
