Pierced, traceried, octagonal pulpit, 1894. Arched entrance to the rood loft. This was a platform above the chancel screen and would have held lifesize figures of St Mary and St John. These icons would not have survived the Puritan revolution of the C17. These days, a rood loft might have a figure of Jesus with arms open in a gesture expressing both welcome and self sacrifice. Other saints are absent; their life stories and associated images are no longer as familiar. In previous times, they were used extensively to teach moral behaviour to less literate generations than ourselves. (Photo Aug 2007).
