Inn, now retirement home and commercial premises. Late C18 with
early-mid C18 rear wing in High Street (q.v.). Facade of red brick
in Flemish bond, with tiled roof. Rear wing in flint with Chilmark
stone chequerwork. Two storeys with attics. Central section to
Countess Road symmetrical, of 3 wide bays with central stair hall
and flanking reception rooms. Plat band bedded in lime putty, and
brick dentilled eaves. Central recessed 6-panelled door with
glazed overlight, and timber doorcase with bracketed canopy.
Sixteen-paned sash windows with keystones to gauged brick lintels.
Panelled shutters. Over door a 12-paned sash. Three hipped
dormers. Contemporary bay to left forming corner to High Street.
Stone quoins and C20 shop front at ground level. Along High
Street, front continues with 2-bay structure with cellar, similar
in detail, but C20 windows and 2 narrow C19 dormers. Further 2
bays added to right in C19, twelve and 16-paned sashes, and further
extended c1985 replacing single storey addition. Sun fire plate.
At angle with High Street, carved head inserted when rebuilt c1960.
