Whiteley Village

Almshouse group. Circa 1912. Red brick with stone dressings in centre, red brick
wings with coved ashlar cornices to hipped plain tiled roof. Tall end stacks.
Plinth and string course at first floor level. 2 storeys with large ground floor
central entrance arch flanked by widely spaced,paired,giant pilasters supporting
an open pediment bavoe the centre. Casement windows on first floor separating the
pairs of pilasters and in the centre. Single bulls eye window on ground floor outer
bays. 2 half-glazed doors behind entrance arch. 3 bay wings with centralarch
crowned by pediment gable and flanked by casements. This block is joined to Nos.
2 and 4 Heather Walk to left, and Nos. 1 and 3 South Avenue to the right.
Whiteley village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading
architects of the day.
