There must be some doubt as to the age of the church tower, as there appear to be windows of a standard Saxon design at the top of the tower, which shows much evidence of rebuilding. British History Online suggests that this tower was once part of a minster dating back to at least 901AD and that it was substantially rebuilt as a parish church in the early 12th century having become dilapidated.
