SD4761NE CHURCH STREET
1685-1/7/71 (North side)
09/07/74 No.8
Stonewell Tavern
(Formerly Listed as:
CHURCH STREET
Nos.6 AND 8)

GV II

Two houses, now one public house. Early C18 and early C19,
altered C19 and late C20. The principal element is the early
C19 building forming the left half. Coursed and squared
sandstone with ashlar dressings and quoins, plus random rubble
sides and rear. Slate roof with gable chimney stacks.
Double-depth plan with the doorway to the right, and rear
extensions.
3 storeys above a basement, and 2 bays. All the openings have
raised plain surrounds. The second floor windows are sashed
without glazing bars; the other windows are late C20
replacements of similar appearance, but with top-hung
casements. The doorway is up a flight of 6 steps parallel to
the front wall. To the right, the earlier element is of 2
(formerly 3 low) storeys, rendered with a composition tile
roof. It was recently altered at ground level by the insertion
of a large tripartite window of 2+6+2 transomed lights,
incorporating the doorway at the right-hand end. The upper
floor has only one small 3-light casement window immediately
below the eaves.
