SW6427 MONUMENT ROAD 631-1/4/196 (West side) 22/05/72 Monument to H M Grylls

GV II*

Memorial gateway giving access to bowling green on site of former castle. 1834. By George Wightwick. By public subscription to Humphry Millet Grylls. Granite ashlar with plinth, weathered buttresses, strings and other details including embattled parapet between tall crocketed pinnacles over buttresses flanking doorway; angle buttresses with gablets, all with turned finials. Rectangular plan. Gothic style. Front and rear elevations identical; central 4-centred arched doorway with sunk panels to spandrels; inscribed panel with trefoil end above; flanking bays with tall trefoil-headed niches and quatrefoils above; lower cornice enriched with Tudor roses, parapet cornice over trefoil frieze. A distinguished design, providing a visually prominent stop to Coinagehall Street. (Colvin H: A Biographical Dictionary of British Architects 1600-1840: London: 1978-: 890).
