Houses, now in part College Annexe and offices. C19, with
medieval origins.
MATERIALS: stone rubble; hipped roof of old plain tiles; slate
gable to left; various brick stacks, rendered to left;
catslide roof to lean-to, to right, with tall brick stack.
EXTERIOR: Nos. 14 & 16: 2 storeys; 4-window range: 2-light
stone mullion windows, moulded to left, and probably C14 to
centre right; C19 plain sashes, and C20 casement. 2 plank
doors with plain round-headed overlights, under chamfered
stone pointed arches; to left, broad C13 pointed arch, with
3-light casement; dressed stone buttress, possibly former
stack base. (Front to river has 1/1: 2/2: 1/1 oriel with side
lights, under slate pentice roof, and to right, 2 similar
sashes; three 2/2 sashes over; stone segmental arches).
2-storey element to left, of stone rubble and render, with
large 3-light windows, and blocked portico with square columns
and prominent cornice; left returned side has 3 late C19, 6/6
sashes between columns, with studio windows over cornice.
Rear wing has moulded pediment and parapet, over two C19, 6/6
sashes between pilasters; painted brick below with
part-blocked 6/6 sash, over coursed rubble basement.
INTERIOR: College Annexe: C19 dogleg staircase with turned
newels and stick balusters. 1st floor: three 4-panel doors;
half-glazed door and screen; single panel door; architraves;
panelled risers, shutters and architrave, to bay window; coved
ceiling with cornices; skirtings; cornice over landing. Ground
floor: reeded and plain architraves; panelled risers and
shutters to windows; cornice; skirting; overlight. Cellar:
stone and brick-lined; plank door.
Nos.14 & 16 (Castle Cliff):
Three C19 winder stairs with stick balusters. 1st floor:
4-panel doors; overlights; 3 wood fireplaces in corner stacks.
Ground floor: 4-panel doors; plank door; C19 slate and marble
fireplace; 2 ogee-stop chamfered ceiling beams; wall cupboard;
early C19 tiled floor to hall; late C19 architrave to door;
C18 fireplace with shouldered surround and moulded tiles; C13
openings. Basement: stone and brick steps; stone fireplace;
plank door and overlight; wall cupboard; tiled floor.
