Shippon and barn range. Dated (168?) (4th digit illegible) on lintel of shippon doorway, extended in later C18; altered, and with C20 additions to west side and south end (the latter mostly demolished). Coursed squared sandstone with quoins, with addition of handmade red brick; stone slate roof. Rectangular 4-bay plan on north-south axis, containing lateral shippons in the centre and at the north end and a waggon bay at the south end; with C18 extension to the north end. Two storeys, facing east, with blocked slit-breathers to the upper floor; a segmental-arched waggon doorway to the 1st bay, with chamfered surround; a Tudor-arched shippon doorway in the centre, flanked by 3-light windows with chamfered flush mullions (that to the left partly blocked); and a similar shippon doorway and window to the 4th bay. Both these doorways have deep monolithic lintels with chamfered soffits (not matched by the jambs) and that in the centre has raised lettering and the date 168?. The north gable of the original range (now covered by the C18 extension and by C20 additions) appears to have at least one similar mullioned window. The C18 extension has (inter alia) a large rainwater head decorated with the Eagle-and-Child motif of the Stanley family. INTERIOR: the stone range has massive stop-chamfered beams supporting the upper floor; a double shippon in the centre, with wooden boskins on both sides; and a single shippon at the north end, with similar boskins.
