House. Early or mid C19. Rendered, solid walls. Tarred slated
roofs, hipped and with centre valley; asbestos slates on rear
roof slope. Rendered chimney on each side wall.
PLAN: Square, double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Front elevation 3-windows-wide with
rusticated ground storey and corner pilasters, the latter
rising to a small entablature at eaves level. Square bay
windows in ground storey with stone mullions and transoms;
small-paned glazing with margin-panes. Each bay has a pitched
roof upon which sits a smaller bay window serving the second
storey. These upper windows are also mullioned and have
gabled, pedimented roofs rising above eaves level; each light
has 4 panes, the topmost one round-headed.
Single-storeyed entrance porch to right, set well back.
Round-arched doorway with moulded archivolt and imposts; door
with 2 moulded panels, patterned fanlight. Moulded top cornice
and shaped blocking-course.
Right-hand side wall plain, except for record-arched window in
second storey; this has a sash window with 6 panes in the
lower sash and patterned glazing in the upper one. The wall is
partly blocked by the adjoining house (Pengwern), not
included.
INTERIOR not inspected.
The Ilfracombe tithe map of 1840 shows a building on this
site. The villa is the best of the scatter of early and mid
C19 houses that occupied the hillside north of the town before
the building developments of the late C19.
