Forecourt lodges of former workhouse. 1839-40. By John
Foulston of Plymouth. Stucco on masonry walls; hipped dry
slate roofs and some rag slate. 2 similar rectangular-on-plan
ranges flanking a carriageway entrance, each range having
short wings at the front, deeper wings at the rear and service
ranges set back at either side. Single storey; 2 similar
5-window 4-bay fronts flanking a gateway. Plain pilasters
marking the bays; 3rd bay front gateway of each lodge projects
as a hipped end with 2 windows; entrance porch with 4-panel
door to inner angle of right-hand lodge; C20 16-pane horned
sashes and moulded eaves cornice. INTERIOR not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: square-on-plan gate piers with scrolled
heads flank gateway with original wrought-iron gates with
scrolled detail and ramped top rail.
