Hotel. 1833 and inscribed 'R.W.' on rainwater head on
extension to rear. By J Foulston of Plymouth. Incised stucco
on rubble over coursed freestone plinth; mid-floor bands;
hipped dry Delabole slate roof with moulded cornice under deep
eaves, large stucco axial stacks; cast-iron ogee gutters.
Large square plan. Classical style. 3 storeys over basement;
symmetrical 5-window entrance front. Original hornless sashes,
most with glazing bars, within moulded eared architraves;
central doorway with panelled reveals, pair of top-glazed
doors, patterned fanlight; all within granite distyle Tuscan
porch. Pike Street has 6-window range with similar details
plus doorway to basement with stucco doorcase. INTERIOR has
many original or later C19 features including modillion
cornice to entrance hall; inner doorway like outer doorway;
wide open-well open-string staircase with Vitruvian scroll
detail; reeded ceiling cornice to large stair hall and similar
detail to door panels. A fine example which makes an important
contribition to the townscape.
