GV I
Triumphal arch. 1723, by Nicholas Hawksmoor. Limestone ashlar. Keyed
semi-circular archway flanked by 2 orders of Corinthian columns set on panelled
plinth and supporting entablature with inscription set on narrow attic.
Rusticated flanking walls, terminated by drum piers, has C18 panelled doors set
in semi-circular arched doorways with lions' heads carved on keystones. The
gateway was built to provide a more convenient entrance for visitors from
Woodstock. The flanking doors were made before 1710 for the garden east of the
palace and moved here in 1773. The builders were Peisley and Townesend.
