War Memorial

War Memorial. c 1920. Portland ashlar. Square tapered shaft to
pyramidal finish on lofty pedestal and base. Set to a bed of
gravel within dwarf wall enclosure. Plinth c 2.2m square with
a central small area of paving to each face set in to
rock-faced Roach stone which carries moulded pedestal rising
to c 2.8m. A band of vertical flutes separates the ovolo plus
cavetto shaft base from a broad scotia and torus above the
principal inscription zone which is set just below eye level.
A wreath with central blank circular face is carved to each
face between the flutes and the inscriptions; further
inscription panels 'hang' over the rock-faced plinth
centrally. All names are in fine incised Roman lettering to a
common size, and the whole monument, set dramatically at the
top of the northern scarp slope is of quiet and dignified
character. There is no sculptor's or other signature on the
monument.
