Town house, an excise house and temporary gaol for smugglers;
later a public house. C16. For the Godolphins. Refronted early
C19, with rendered front over local rubble having plinth,
1st-floor sill string, mid-floor band and sill brackets to 2nd
floor, asbestos slate roof, hipped on the right; projecting
eaves on brackets. Deep plan incorporating the core of the C16
house. 3 storeys; slightly irregular 4-window range. Early/mid
C19 hornless sashes with glazing bars except where removed
from 3rd window from left, 1st floor; pair of sashes above and
left of doorway; central C16 moulded granite 4-centred arched
doorway fronted by early C19 distyle Doric porch with unfluted
columns; C20 scrolled balustrade above and old inscription in
relief: "EXCISE OFFICE" to string behind. Rear has three
12-pane hornless sashes to ballroom. INTERIOR: front room on
left has original chamfered ceiling beams and bowtell-moulded
joists (similar to The Manor House, Grampound); original
4-centred arched doorway to former rear of through-passage;
chamfered jamb to nearby doorway; chamfered joists to part of
passage. Late C18 ballroom with original bowed balcony with
turned balustrade. The Angel Hotel has important local
historical associations, and is a prominent feature in this
fine street.
