House. Mid C17; refronted, eaves raised and extended to the
rear in early C18; further extensions and alterations of c1810
and c1860. Dressed Moolham stone to street (east) facade and
stucco to garden front (south). Slate roof to main building
and left (south) wing and pantile to service wing; brick
stacks. 3-unit plan with service wing to right (north), early
C18 wing to the rear left (south) and C19 stairhall to angle
between wings.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. The earlier block, facing east to North
Street, of 4-window range, has right-of-centre, 6-panel door
with raised-and-fielded panels and shallow overlight of 4
panes, beneath a blind window and a ridge stack to its left;
it is flanked by 3/6-pane sashes with horns; to the far left
is a blind window to both floors. All the architraves are
moulded, painted, and have cyma-moulded keystones. These and
sashes to the right service wing may have been cross-windows.
Gutters are supported by wrought-iron brackets.
The garden front, facing south, is rendered with plain
pilasters to the sides and left-of-centre immediately below a
ridge stack. 2 storeys; irregular 6-window range.
The attic in the gable end to the right, in the main
east-facing block, has a small C19 two/two-pane sash in a wide
early C18 architrave with cyma-moulded keystone. The 2 windows
below it are mid C19 one/one-pane sashes with margin panes;
that to the first floor has a Regency-style balcony with a
swept hipped canopy which has an open-work frieze. To the
inside-right is a wide early C18 door, glazed to the top in
mid C19 with margin panes: the doorcase is early C18, with
moulded segmental pediment and cyma-moulded keystone supported
by fluted Corinthian pilasters. The window to the left is a
late C19 two/two-pane sash, that to the far left is 8/8-panes;
all windows on the first floor are 8/8-panes except that to
the left-of-centre, which is 1/1-panes.
INTERIOR: Hall entrance from garden has c1810 elliptical arch.
To the left of it is a small early C18 panelled room with
chamfered beams and pine raised-and-fielded panels with
bolection-moulding to the main panels and to the 2-panel door,
moulded panels to the shutters of the splayed window opening;
it has a moulded box cornice and cyma-moulded fire-surround;
below this room is an C18 cellar with stone steps, a flagstone
floor, segmental-arched barrel-vaulting to the roof and an
opening onto the garden. To the ground-floor rear of that is
the kitchen with a c1810 dresser filling the end wall. The
room to the right of the hall has c1860 dado and skirting. The
hall leads to an open-well open-string staircase with reeded
balusters, swept wreathed mahogany handrail and wreathed
curtail step. To the north-west corner of the main block is
part of a c1710 staircase with closed string and turned
balusters.
The attic to the main block has repositioned pine panelling
and C17 A-frame roof trusses. The rear left wing (south) has
an early C18 four-bay butt-purlin roof structure with straight
principal rafters.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: a brick wall with Ham Hill stone capping
encloses the garden to the south along North Street and
connects with the piers of the wall to The Vicarage, Court
Barton (qv). At the middle, it curves in towards gate piers
with banded rustication, moulded cornices and pyramidal caps,
which flank a C20 gate. It supports railings with
square-section alternate loop-and-rail design.
