GV II
School. Dated 1853. Rough Ham Hill stone ashlar to the front,
limestone rubble and brick to the rear, slate roof with brick
stacks to the rear building.
EXTERIOR: the North Street front, facing west, is
single-storey; symmetrical 3-window range in Domestic
Tudor/Gothic style. To the central main block are 3-light
mullioned and transomed windows with cast-iron frames and
small panes: cornice, and a parapet inscribed " National Daily
and Sunday Schools, erected by Voluntary Subscription A D
1853"; and to the centre of this is a bellcote with an offset
gable and an obelisk finial. Flanked by Gothic-style
diagonally-planked door with ornamental strap hinges, and
moulded segmental-arched architraves. These are set in gabled
walls screening a single-storey lean-to to the left, and a
gabled wing to the right.
To the rear is a large limestone rubble building with a
circular louvre in gable facing west. The east-facing gable
with larger circular louvre is entered by a brick staircase to
a first-floor door, flanked by 3-light mullioned and transomed
windows. The right return is 2 storeys; of 4-window range: the
first floor has paired 4/4-pane sashes with thick wooden
lintels and brick surrounds; the ground floor has two 3-light
mullioned and transomed windows with a taller 4-light,
2-transom one to the left and a door to the right. The first
floor of the left return has 3 paired 4/4-pane sashes with
wooden lintels and a single 4/4 one to the right. The ground
floor has 6/6-pane horned sashes and one 3-light mullioned and
transomed window to left of centre.
INTERIOR: typical of a mid C19 school, with tongue-and-groove
panelling to the lower part of the walls.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: The forecourt is enclosed by a low Ham
Hill stone wall stepped down to the contour of the hill; the
piers have pyramidal tops, the railings are wide-spaced
long/short spearhead. Substantial stone steps flanked by low
walls lead to each door, and the rear building is enclosed by
a high rubblestone wall.
