Suburban villa. 1840s. By George Wightwick. For Frederick
Hill. Incised stucco with hoods on pilasters with consoles and
sill brackets to 1st floor, moulded eared architraves to
ground floor; dry Delabole slate hipped roofs with wide eaves
on brackets; stepped stucco axial stacks with moulded
cornices. L-shaped double-depth plan plus attached coach house
and stables parallel to rear at right-angles.
2 storeys; symmetrical 3-bay front. Original sashes with
glazing bars; central 3-light window with round-arched lights
over original doorway with 6-panel door framed by sidelights
and overlights with latticed glazing; slate-roofed porch with
moulded entablature on paired Corinthian columns. Left-hand
return has early C20 bowed 5-light window with horned sashes
with glazing bars; projecting on the left a 2-window range
detailed like the front. Rear is 6-window range with original
12-pane hornless sashes except for 5 blind openings on the
right. 2-window service wing with original sashes over horned
copies. C20 heightened coach house has 3 bays, blind except
for 1 original sash. Rear return of coach house/stables
altered C20.
INTERIOR: complete where inspected. Original features include:
segmental vault to entrance hall, the vault adjacent to stair
hall with cross ribs; open-well, open-string staircase with
turned balusters, shaped brackets and handrail scrolled over
newel; acanthus ceiling cornice over stair with petalled
central rose. Drawing room (left) with anthemion over egg and
dart cornice and marble chimneypiece with florets to frieze;
right-hand room (the library) with moulded ceiling cornice
(fireplace not inspected) and dining room (behind drawing
room) with original marble chimneypiece and ornate cast-iron
grate (similar to one at Lismore, qv) and probably later C19
interlaced ceiling band over original egg and dart cornice.
Copies of the architect's drawings are exhibited in the
entrance vestibule.
