Description

CREWKERNE

ST4409 MARKET SQUARE
876-1/7/100 (South side)
Nos.31 AND 33

GV II

Two shops. 1880-90.
MATERIALS: Ham Hill stone ashlar facade, brick to the rest;
slate roof with brick stacks to centre and gable ends.
PLAN: double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with substantial attics; each unit is a
symmetrical 2-window range. Each unit has an ornamental
forward-facing gable, the ridges level with the main ridge;
pediments above the apexes rest on panels which sweep out and
rest on moulded cornices with acorn-type finials to the sides;
below are paired sashes crossing the eaves cornice, which have
hoodmoulds with keystones, are flanked by scrolled consoles
between the upper and middle cornices and have large ball
finials to sides and centre. The 6/1-pane sashes to first and
second floors have gauged segmental arches with keystones,
moulded hoods and a continuous string course at impost level,
those to the first floor are tripartite.
The shops have ornamental reeding to the pilasters and gabled
consoles flanking the moulded cornices to the shopfronts.
To each side, entrances to the upper rooms are 5-panel doors
with one horizontal panel to the top, and 2 large overlights;
separated from the plate-glass shop windows which also have
continuous overlights by painted wooden pilasters reflecting
the style of the stone ones to the outsides but with foliate
capitals. Both have panelled ceilings above the set-back
double doors.
INTERIOR: No.31 to the left retains its late C19 character
with tongued and grooved panelling, 4-panel door to the left
and a central rear door with ornamental margin-panes. Included
for group value.
